Chapter 22

“Yay, the food’s here,” Deacon says as we open the door to the room they’ve been given for the night.

“Thanks,” Campbell says, putting the boxes onto the coffee table.

“He means you guys, but he’s also dying of hunger because he’s a big baby with a giant appetite,” Katie says, waving me over to her on one of the couches.

“Olivia, I’m so excited for the next couple weeks. When are we going shopping?” she asks, jumping up to give me a hug.

“Next couple weeks?” I ask, smiling over her shoulder to say hi to the others on the couches.

“I haven’t asked her yet,” Campbell says right behind me.

He grabs my hips and squeezes between me and the coffee table to take a seat next to where Katie was, and my cheeks heat, knowing we’re going to be in the same lap sitting position we were in last time. At least while everyone eats, and no one is standing up to sing.

Great. Because this isn’t even more weird than it was last time or anything.

“Well, of course you’re taking her; you don’t have to ask. But I want to go shopping with her,” Katie says, leaning over to grab a slice she hands to Campbell and one she hands to me.

Betty and Theresa are deep in a conversation about dresses as I take my seat on Campbell’s lap, still not understanding what I so clearly should.

“Shopping for what?” I ask, trying again to have someone explain to me what is going on without coming right out and screaming at them that I have no idea what they’re all talking about.

Katie laughs, until she stops and looks closer at me, her brows drawn down.

“You’re serious?” she asks, and I roll my eyes.

“Damn, okay,” she says, her eyes wide and brows way up now.

Maybe I put too much exasperation in my eye roll.

“Campbell, what the hell, dude?” Deacon asks, shaking his head.

“Olivia,” Campbell says, putting one hand on mine. “Will you go with me to Katie and Deacon’s eighteenth birthday party?” he asks.

“Wait, you guys are having a birthday party? Together?” I ask, both of them grinning like fools. “Am I invited?”

“Ridiculous question, of course you are. Pay attention to the man, he asked you a question,” Deacon says, gesturing to Campbell who is wearing an amused smile.

“Oh, right. Of course, I’ll go with you,” I say to general cheers.

“Why is this such a big deal?” I ask Campbell, leaning into him so I can ask quietly.

“It’s a black tie affair,” Campbell says, with a small shake of his head.

“My darling, Campbell, this is so much better than that,” Katie says, reaching into her bag and pulling out two aqua glass bottles with corks in the top and handing them to us.

“This is a very Bond moment, and you’re going to be thanking us,” Deacon says, and winks.

“Definitely,” Katie says, raising a brow and grinning in a decidedly devilish way.

Campbell pops the cork on his bottle and pulls out a rolled up scroll with gold and black lettering, I follow his lead and read my own.
